Gorilla Viewing Protocols

Mountain gorilla trekking is a remarkable privilege, and protecting the gorillas and their habitat is everyone's responsibility. To help safeguard their wellbeing and minimise the risk of disease transmission, visitors are required to follow the guidelines below.

- Maximum visitors per gorilla group

- Minimum distance from the gorillas (32.8 feet)

- Minimum age for tracking and viewing, in years
- Maximum viewing time
- Visitors may spend a maximum of one hour with a gorilla group per day.
- Group size
- A maximum of eight visitors may visit each gorilla group.
- Keep your distance
- Maintain a minimum distance of 10 metres (32.8 feet) from the gorillas. Please follow your guide's instructions, as circumstances in the forest may occasionally require additional precautions.
- Keep your voice low
- Speak quietly and avoid sudden or rapid movements that could alarm or disturb the gorillas.
- No eating or drinking
- Food and drinks are not permitted while you are in the presence of the gorillas.
- If you need to cough or sneeze
- Cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas. This helps reduce the risk of transmitting respiratory illnesses.
- If a gorilla approaches or charges
- Do not panic or run. Remain calm, avoid direct eye contact, and follow the instructions of your guide.
- No flash photography
- Flash photography is not permitted. Please ensure your camera or phone flash is switched off before taking photographs.
- No smoking
- Smoking is strictly prohibited during the gorilla tracking experience.
- Leave no trace
- Take everything you bring into the forest back out with you. Do not litter or leave anything behind.
For the most current requirements, Mvua Safaris follows guidance issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) great ape tourism guidelines.
